The beautiful scenery in County Sligo was an inspiration for WB.Yeats, who is buried at Drumcliffe Churchyard, under loaf-shaped Benbulben Mountain. The lakes of Sligo, with their still waters and wooded islands, are enchanting, and form a striking contrast to the county's rugged uplands. The county is extremely rich in archeological remains and these include a Neolithic cairn on the summit of Knocknarae, known locally as Queen Maeve's grave and the largest Megalithic cemetery in Ireland at Carrowmore. There are some excellent surfing beaches, including Strandhill, Rosses Point and Enniscrone. Lissadell House, once home to Countess Markievicz, is a good family attraction, with a lovely beach nearby. Sligo town is a short drive and has good bars and restaurants, theatres, and a small art gallery.
